Description:I took delivery Saturday, August 21st, of my ZERO "DS" (electric dual-sport) after two years of waiting. I put a $500 deposit along with my order on August 15, 2008. The only motorcycle they had in production then was the non-street legal dirt bike. I need to be street legal to ride the area where my desert cabin is, so I said I would wait for the dual-sport model. Well it was last on ZERO's adgenda, to be developed and put into production, after their purely street model "S". The quality of construction is outstanding.It rides great! Good handling. I love it. This bike is a blast!I'm going to bring it to D.V. with me to ride in the Furnace Creek area when I'm not out on the group antique rides. Can you say; "a silent ride to Golden Canyon, for star gazing, Tuesday night". Yes!I'm taking it along with me on my trip to Utah next week, so the first dirt it will taste will be up there near Escalante.Frank

Freestyle Sportbike competition
Last Saturday I was invited to attend the 4th Round of the national championship at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale. Thousands of people came out to see the event over a beautiful 85 degree California weekend. I was very impressed with the organizers at XDL and especially with the riders who attended. I should stress that though these people from the US, Japan, France and Russia are riders, there are also well conditioned athletes.
Tops on my list for both entertaining rides and personable attributes was Eric Pettit who is the current points leader. He is a charismatic young man who currently lives in Atlanta and travels the country to compete. He told me he got his nick name, E-Brake, by power sliding compact cars into parallel parking spaces. His father, a bit of a dare devil himself, always encouraged Eric to reach his goals of being a professional stunt rider. I told Eric that he reminded me of a young stuntman I used to watch in the early 1960's at our local dirt track named Evel Knievel. Flattered with the compliment, Eric was quick to point out that the master showman was one of his idols and he learned his wheelie moves watching Evel videos.
Speaking with Aaron Colton and Jessie Prewitt, they informed me that entry into the sport is not that expensive. Take a fairly new but used sportbike (most seem to like the 600cc bikes) and add a few features like a cage. This protects the engine, gearbox, pegs, levers and handlebars and it means that a rider no longer pays a high price for crashes. It has also advanced the progression of the sport tremendously. Back in the days before cages, each wreck meant 2-3 weeks in the shop. Today a rider can lay down 20 wrecks in a week and learn a new trick just like that. Jessie says for under $6000 you can have a decent stuntbike ready for competition..
The competition itself is all about speed, strength, ant the coolest trick. Like with any new X sport, the names of the tricks are equally interesting. The main headings are wheelies, stoppies, burnouts, and acrobatics. Each of those heading has a whole grab-bag of tricks.
The Circle Wheelie require a high skill level to perform because they are so technical and that is in a parking lot by yourself. Imagine having to do 10 rotations as quickly as possible against a fellow competitor in front of thousands of fans. The throttle, clutch and brake must be consistent to keep the bike from sliding out.
The Highchair Circle Wheelie is performed with the rider sitting on the fuel tank with his/her legs over the handlebars. It is considered one of the most difficult tricks because they must lean the machine without any use of their legs or the rear of the motorcycle.
The Stranger Wheelie is performed at a high rate of speed into a circle with the riders left hand operating the throttle. It is called the stranger because the athletes say it feels as if they are a stranger on the bike.
The Flamingo Wheelie requires the rider to do a standing wheelie with one leg positioned straight back off the bike.
Rev Limiter Coasters wheelies are hard to see in a photo but easy to hear in person. The rider wheelies past the balance point and pulls in the clutch while tapping the rear brake to keep from dumping. Look good, sounds great, but one slip of the clutch and it's all over.
No-Hander Wheelies are very hard to handle and master. Think how hard it is just to wheelie, no let go. Lottsa luck!Ralph Louie Wheelie is a staple in the stunt riding arsenol. The R & L have a double meaning by the R leg on L peg or L leg on R peg while the other leg is off the bike. This is a great looking trick!
The Highchair Stoppie is doing a front end wheelie/stoppie while sitting on the tank with your feet over the handlebars. Just for fun, the riders sometimes also throw in a 180 degree turn at the end.
The Long Stoppie can't be shown well in a photograph. It is when the rider is on the front tire for 600 feet or farther. It requires a great deal of speed and balance. Bill Dixon holds the world record longest stoppie traveling over 1200 feet and the fastest Long Stoppie record is held by Kane Freisen at 137 MPH.
The Carve Stoppie is turning the bike while on the front tire. Some riders can carve for hundreds of feet and even turn the bike 360 degrees upon stopping.
A Wall Park Stoppie is when the rear tire of the bike comes to rest upon the track retaining wall, or any other fixed object. This is a great display of precision riding.
Drifting is a type of burnout that carries over from the car culture. Controlled slides at a high rate of speed, most riders do not even touch their front brake. There is a tiny margin for error in this trick before you eat the pavement.
The Crazy Larry Burnout is a real crowd pleaser. The rider does 360 degree burnouts while dragging his left foot. It is very loud and whips up a virtual tornado of smoke!
The Stasis Burnout is much harder than it appears. It is a a balancing act where the rider stands on the pegs and burns out without the bike moving forward. This trick has a very high degree of difficulty.
The Christ acrobatic move is standing on the gas tank with your arms extended. It is not overly difficult, but is a great looking trick that most riders learn early on.
Zero is a move where the rider makes the bike move left or right without use of the handlebars. Zeroes can be performed stand, sitting, or even riding backwards.
Churro acrobatics are not when the riders eat Mexican pastries. It is a combo of a Christ and a Zero where the rider stands on the tank and makes the bike weave left and right. Kind of sounds like the pastry would be a better idea....
A One Legged Cochise interesting enough is not named after one of my best friends but rather it is a combination trick of a Zero and a Ralph Louie. The rider stands on one peg with the opposite leg while weaving back and forth hands free. This is an extremely impressive trick to watch as the rider must have perfect trottle control as he does not touch it or the brakes.
The Elevator is when the rider hops from the pegs into a Christ. Perfect balance is required to not meet Him.
The Barell Roll must be seen to be believed. The rider is sitting in a Highchair and tumbles backwards end over end into a regular riding position. Who thinks this stuff up, Gumby?

I spent Wednesday walking Prague and snapping away. One of the first places I saw was a restaurant and jewellers called Kingstone! Later I went for a meal in a small courtyard restaurant. The waiter spoke German and offered me a 'typical Czech dinner. It was pork in a brown gravy with slices of dumpling that looked like bread with cream and cranberries. I did not like the gravy at all. I have tried many Czech beers but nothing was really outstanding. Still, the atmosphere was fabulous and I will return one day. Thursday morning I packed and went to ride off when the clutch lever just flopped to the bar. The Hydraulic fluid had gone. Now I was suspicious of a leak as I had had the bike serviced just over a week before. The hotel receptionist was extremely helpful and after a few miles walking I was back with dot4 fluid from a petrol station. Cost me a fiver. I topped it up but did not bleed it so it was a right fandango to ride with just a few millimetres of play. Add to that my misreading of the google maps and I ended up taking the old Highway6 out to Germany instead of the new Autobahn 6 directly to Nuernberg! It deposited me 50 miles to the north of the A6 in germany. The route was so tortuous and diverted and ripped up by endless roadworks that four hours later I cheered with relief as I saw the big sign declaring 'Freistat Bayern'. I had made it to Bavaria! I rode to a petrol station, tanked up on fuel and Nurnberger Bratwurst and a Weissbier. I had to cancel my visit to my former boss and ride all the way to Offingen (near Augsburg in southern Bavaria). My son-in law has a well equipped workshop there. He's designing and building a very specialised drill rig. It uses sonic vibration to drill through very difficult terrain. I managed to find the slave cylinder and bleed the clutch that evening. It's very satisfying to do maintenance work on your bike. Normally I am too lazy to bother. At the restaurant that evening I chatted to two lads who were WALKING from the very south of Germany to the far north of the Country. They were
dressed in the traditional clothes of a journeyman (apprentice builder). People seemed to like that they were keeping the tradition alive and helped them in any way they could. 
Friday morning I spent servicing the RSV and learning all about Paul's rig. He invented a new type of slurry pump and I stayed to see it tested. I was late getting away and then I hit major traffic on the A8/A5/A6. It began to pour down so I dodged under an overpass with some other bikers and slipped on my waterproofs. A bit like closing the gate after the horse has bolted but I needed to minimise the soaking. Needless to say 15 minutes up the road on the way to Mannheim the sun came out and cooked me! I've worked out how to control the weather. If you want rain for your garden - light a BBQ. If you want sunshine put on rain gear. I couldn't make it to Brussel so I called my friend and then found a hotel in Aachen for the night. Wienerschnitzel and Weissbier fixed all the aches and I started my calculations for fuel consumption on the trip. I first called at a small hotel named Goering! It was full. I think I'd change the name if it was mine! Saturday morning saw me up at 6am and riding fast in the cold air to Brussel. Now as much as I like Brussel, it is the most difficult city in the world to find your way around. Every roundabout has 20 streets coming off of it and the street names are so long and the sign (if there is one) so small that you have no chance of reading it. I went by instinct and memory and managed to get within 2 minutes of Lionel's place before resorting to calling him for directions. It was great to see him again and after a few coffees he kindly drove ahead of me and put me on the E40 to Calais. Two hours later I was boarding the ferry for home. Where, of course, it was pissing down. I had a good chat with some BMW R1200GS riders and we all had to pull in and pull on the rain gear. It stopped raining.Home, pub, reflect, calculate, download over 200 photos, sleep like Rip Van Winkle. One thing I learned, my next trip will be a relaxing tour with Extra Mile Bike Tours! The next weekend is the Bike protest ride where we can all pretend we are hippies. That's the next blog.
